Site Review: ChargePoint Castaic

ChargePoint opened another of their California Energy Commission grant funded sites. This one is in Castaic, just north of Los Angeles. The site is right off of I-5, and it will be helpful for heading over the mountains northbound.

The site has two 50 kW Tritium chargers with both CCS and CHAdeMO hookups, as well as a dual-head Level 2 AC charger. Even though this site is officially open, I wasn’t able to activate either of the chargers. DC1 had a fault, and DC2 wouldn’t read my RFID card or activate using the app.

Outside of those issues, the site will be very useful. It will help northbound traffic, and it will allow southbound drivers to avoid charging at the busier sites in the greater Los Angeles area. I think the primary use for this charger, though, will be a destination charger for people spending time at Castaic Lake or the Angeles National Forest.

Overall, the site is good, but even as a destination charger, these units need to be faster than 50 kW. Also, this is potentially a very high-demand location, so two DCFC units simply isn’t enough.
